FAQ on team management, funding your training, and why to train in management and leadership

Questions about management, leadership, or how to fund a management programme for your teams? Our answers are below.

Management can be defined as the craft of leading a team and organising resources — people, money, materials — to reach an organisation’s objectives. Effective management matters because it holds the team together, optimises collective performance, fosters a positive working environment and lets the company adapt to change and stay competitive. The manager’s role is therefore central to the success of any organisation.

A manager carries several key responsibilities: setting clear, measurable objectives for the team, planning and organising the work, delegating appropriately, steering the team’s performance, motivating people, keeping communication flowing, handling conflict, and contributing to each member’s skills development. They also embody the managerial stance the organisation expects.

Several managerial skills and qualities are essential: leadership, excellent interpersonal ability (communication, active listening, empathy, relational ease), decision-making, conflict management, organisation, the capacity to delegate, to motivate the team and to adapt their management style. Soft skills such as assertiveness, emotional intelligence and effective communication are increasingly sought after.

Although often used interchangeably, management and leadership are distinct but complementary. Management focuses on organising, planning, controlling and coordinating tasks and resources to reach specific objectives; the manager’s role is to make sure the work gets done properly. Leadership is more about vision, inspiration, influence and the ability to motivate a team and engage it towards a common goal. A good manager often has solid leadership skills, but there are leaders with no formal management position. Our programmes develop both sides.

Management training matters most when you are new to the role. It teaches the fundamentals, provides the tools and methods needed to manage a team effectively, and builds your managerial stance. To become an effective manager you need to understand the role, know how to adapt your style, and master good managerial practice. Training helps you avoid the common mistakes and gain confidence quickly.

Even experienced managers gain a great deal. The field keeps moving. Training lets them build new skills, discover the most recent practice (remote management, cross-functional management, situational management), reflect on their own style and adapt it, and prepare to be the manager of tomorrow. It is also a chance to exchange with other management professionals and deepen their expertise.

Situational management is a leadership approach holding that there is no single “right” management style. An effective manager adapts their style to the development level (competence and motivation) of each team member and to the specific situation. That calls for real flexibility and a good grasp of each person’s needs. Our programmes explore in detail how to adapt your style.

Conflict management is a key managerial skill. A manager must first identify the sources of tension. Then it matters to listen to everyone involved and to encourage non-violent communication and transactional analysis to defuse the situation. The goal is to find constructive solutions that preserve positive relationships within the team. Mediation and negotiation techniques are often useful. Our programmes include modules on conflict management.

Remote management covers leading teams whose members work from home or are geographically spread out. It requires specific skills in communication, tracking objectives and maintaining team cohesion. Cross-functional management means steering projects or missions by mobilising people over whom the manager has no direct hierarchical authority. It calls for strong leadership by influence and excellent negotiation and relational communication skills. Both are increasingly common.

Change management is the set of processes, tools and methods used to support an organisation, a team or individuals through a transformation — a new strategy, a new tool, a reorganisation. The manager’s role is crucial in explaining what is at stake, reassuring people, handling resistance and mobilising the team so the transition succeeds. Our programmes cover good practice in change management.

A good manager encourages assertiveness and self-confidence within the team. That starts with creating an environment of trust where everyone feels free to speak. The manager can use coaching, hand out responsibility, recognise initiative and teach non-violent communication and relational effectiveness techniques. Specialists in human relations can also step in. Assertiveness means defending your ideas with respect, without aggression or passivity, which is essential for healthy relationships and stronger collective performance.

Soft skills are fundamental. Interpersonal communication, empathy, relational ease, conflict management, assertiveness and emotional intelligence are the indispensable qualities that let a manager communicate better, build positive relationships, motivate the team and handle conflict effectively. They contribute directly to a better working climate, stronger collective performance and better retention. Developing them is a key objective of our programmes.

An OPCO (Opérateur de Compétences) is a state-approved joint body in France whose mission is to support professional training and develop apprenticeships. Its main role is to collect companies’ training contributions and fund their skills development plan, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses. OPCOs help companies define their skills needs and find the right management programme. They apply only to companies with a French entity.

Every company in France that contributes to continuing professional education can potentially obtain OPCO funding for its employees’ management training. The terms vary with the industry OPCO, the size of the company and the type of path envisaged, so training managers and HR directors should check the specifics with their own OPCO.

To obtain coverage, the company normally submits a funding request to its OPCO before the programme starts. The request includes the programme, the training organisation’s quote and the objectives sought. The OPCO reviews the file against its criteria and priorities and notifies the company of its decision. Management programmes aimed at developing managerial skills are often given priority.

OPCOs can fund a wide range: management fundamentals for people stepping into the role, leadership development, team management, project management, change management, and more specialised programmes such as remote or cross-functional management. The aim is to let managers and their teams acquire the skills needed to perform and to meet current challenges.

It reduces the direct cost of training, lets the company invest in developing its managers’ and teams’ skills (which improves collective performance and motivation), meets legal obligations on continuing professional education, and provides assurance that the training followed is of quality and suited to the company’s needs.

As a Qualiopi-certified training organisation, we can support you throughout. We help you identify the management programme that fits your needs, put together your funding application, and we provide every document required (detailed programme, quote, training agreement). Our objective is to make access to our programmes straightforward so you can build your teams’ skills.
